Why the two totals differ
- You fly Scoot out of Singapore; they fly AirAsia up and Batik Air back from KL. Different markets, different fares — S$396.00 against S$519.60

Two things the email does not tell you
- It does not list the passengers or the fare. The confirmation shows flights, fare classes (N out, X back) and nothing else — confirm all four seats are on K77HNV in Manage Booking before you size the car and the rooms
- The 10:35 return deletes the last morning. Check-in closes 09:35, so the car goes back at 07:45 and the Perth city stops move to the 9th
Baggage
- Fare classes N and X are the bare tiers: checked bags, seats and food are all add-ons
- Cabin allowance is stated as two pieces within 54 × 38 × 23 cm; checked bags must be within 158 cm total (L+W+H)
- Four people on a self-drive week will each want a checked bag — buy it when you check in, not at the airport

- Every pick lists a kitchen, which is the reason to take them: four breakfasts and a cooked dinner or two pays for the difference, and it is the biggest single lever on the food line
- Check the title says "entire place" before you book. Airbnb labels some two-bedroom units "Rooms in <town>", meaning a suite inside a host's home — the links above go straight to each listing, so read the badge under the title
- None of them has four separate beds. Two-bedroom units sleep four as two couples or with a sofa bed; if the four of you need four beds, filter for 3 beds and expect +A$60–120 a night
- One-night stays carry the cleaning fee. The figures above are the all-in totals the search returns, so that is already in them — the nightly rate alone understates a single night by A$60–90
Two booking traps
- The Rottnest ferry from Fremantle is A$87.50; from Perth's Barrack Street it is A$135.50. Same island, same day. Fremantle is the sailing to book, which is why Friday belongs to Fremantle
- A Malaysian driving licence is fine, but only the physical card. A digital licence is not accepted at the counter — carry the card, and get a spare before leaving

- The conditions, in their words: carry your licence with you, follow the WA road rules, comply with any conditions of your licence and only drive vehicles you are authorised to drive, and have a current and valid licence that has not been suspended, cancelled, disqualified or withdrawn
- No international driving permit. That page never mentions one. The only translation clause on it sits under Visiting from diplomatic services and consulates — “if your licence is not in English, you must carry an English translation of your licence which has been certified by your consulate” — which is a rule for posted consular staff, not for visitors
- The Malaysian card is bilingual anyway, so a translation is moot; the physical card is what the roadside and the rental counter both ask for — a phone copy is no good at either
- Name every driver on the rental. An unnamed driver is uninsured, and the second-driver fee is cheaper than the excess
- A full licence only. A Malaysian learner (L) licence does not authorise driving here, and a provisional one carries the P-plate restrictions listed above

- Four adults plus luggage means a compact SUV, not an economy hatch
- Book an all-in rate with the excess waiver and a second named driver; the headline daily rate is the bare car and roughly doubles by the time you hand it back
